Short answer: The lowest official follower threshold for earning is Twitch Affiliate at 25 followers, which also requires streaming hours and viewers. Many other money-related milestones sit at 500 (Facebook Stars, YouTube fan funding, X Original Content Rewards), followed by 1,000 for full YouTube Partner Programme ad revenue and for going LIVE on TikTok, and 10,000 to 50,000 for TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program, Facebook subscriptions and Snapchat’s invite-only programme. Almost every milestone also needs watch time, views or engagement, so the follower count opens the door but rarely gets you through it alone.
Round numbers feel like achievements, but on most platforms only a few thresholds actually change what you can do. This overview lists the milestones that platforms officially publish, what each one unlocks and the extra conditions that come with it, as of October 2026.
Why do follower milestones matter?
Platforms use follower thresholds as a simple first filter: they show that a real audience has chosen to follow you. Once you pass one, the platform usually checks other signals, such as watch time, views or account standing, before switching on a feature. Knowing the exact threshold helps you set a realistic goal instead of chasing a number that unlocks nothing.
Which milestones unlock features and money on each platform?
| Milestone | Platform | What it unlocks | Other conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 followers | Twitch | Affiliate Program: subscriptions, Bits and ad revenue | 4 hours streamed on 4 different days and an average of 3 concurrent viewers on 4 different days, all within 30 days; two-factor authentication; ages 13–17 need parental consent |
| 500 followers for 30 days | Stars (fan tipping) | Eligible country, Community Standards and monetisation policies | |
| 500 subscribers | YouTube | Fan funding such as memberships and Super Chat, Creator Partnerships, Shopping | 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days |
| 500 verified followers | X | Original Content Rewards | Premium subscription, 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days, 18+, supported country |
| 1,000 subscribers | YouTube | Full Partner Programme, including ad revenue | 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days |
| 1,000 followers | TikTok | Going LIVE | 18+; the follower number may vary by region; LIVE Gifts need 18+ (19+ in South Korea) |
| 1,000 streams per track | Spotify | Recorded royalties for that track | Counted over the previous 12 months |
| 10,000 followers | Subscriptions | Or 250+ return viewers, plus 50,000 post engagements or 180,000 watch minutes in 60 days | |
| 10,000 followers | TikTok | Creator Rewards Program | 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, 18+ (19+ in South Korea), personal account in an eligible country, original videos of at least one minute |
| 50,000 followers | Snapchat | Monetization Program (by invitation) | 15,000 hours of view time in 28 days (3,000 from Spotlight), Snap Star, 18+ |
| 100,000 subscribers | YouTube | Silver Creator Award | Review of the channel; Gold at 1 million, Diamond at 10 million, Red Diamond at 100 million |
Two programmes deserve a note. On YouTube, from 1 February 2027 new channels joining the full Partner Programme will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, while channels already in the programme keep their status; the 500-subscriber tier is not changing, and our YouTube Partner Programme guide covers the details. On X, Creator Revenue Sharing was retired on 7 September 2026 and Original Content Rewards replaced it, so older “X pays at 500 followers” articles may describe the wrong programme.
For Snapchat, the full criteria and the history of Spotlight payments are in how Snapchat pays creators.
What about TikTok, Instagram and Twitch?
TikTok and Twitch both publish their thresholds in their help centres. On TikTok you must be at least 18 and have 1,000 followers to go LIVE, although TikTok notes the follower number may vary by region. Its Creator Rewards Program asks for 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, a personal account in good standing in a country where the programme is available, and original videos of at least one minute; only qualified views from the For You feed earn rewards, and views from the same account count once per video. On Twitch, the Affiliate Program needs 25 followers, 4 hours of streaming on 4 different days and an average of 3 concurrent viewers on 4 different days, all within the same 30-day window, plus two-factor authentication. Older guides sometimes quote different figures, so check the Achievements section of your Twitch Creator Dashboard, which tracks your progress.
Instagram’s options, from subscriptions to gifts, are covered in Instagram monetisation requirements, and YouTube’s short-form earnings are explained in how YouTube Shorts monetisation works.
Are followers enough to hit a milestone?
Rarely. Look at the “other conditions” column and a pattern appears:
- Time-based tests: watch hours on YouTube, view time on Snapchat and watch minutes on Facebook all measure attention, not audience size.
- Quality of followers: X counts only verified followers and impressions from verified users.
- Reviews: YouTube reviews every channel before it joins the Partner Programme or receives a Creator Award, and Snapchat’s programme is invitation-only.
- Ongoing activity: from February 2027, YouTube will also expect Partner Programme channels to stay active, for example with two long-form videos or five Shorts every 90 days, or by meeting watch-hour or Shorts-view minimums.
On Spotify the milestone is per track rather than per account. If you are unsure what counts towards the 1,000, see what counts as a stream on Spotify.
Do bought followers count towards milestones?
They count towards the number people see, which can help with social proof, but they do not satisfy the conditions platforms actually pay for. Bought followers do not add watch hours or engaged view time, bought plays and views never earn money or royalties, and reviews can look beyond the headline count. YouTube, for example, says channels with artificially inflated subscriber counts are not eligible for Creator Awards.
If you use a growth service, treat it as a small boost to visibility around content that already holds attention, not as a way to qualify. Our guide to real vs fake followers explains the difference in quality.
How should you plan for your next milestone?
- Pick the milestone that unlocks something you will use, such as fan funding at 500 YouTube subscribers, rather than the next round number.
- Work backwards from the second condition. If you need 3,000 watch hours, plan longer videos people finish, not just more uploads.
- Track the platform’s own dashboard, such as YouTube Studio, Creator Studio on X or Snapchat Insights, since that is what the platform uses.
- Do not rely on one income stream. Brand deals often arrive before platform payouts; see how much influencers earn in the UK for typical rates by follower count.
Frequently asked questions
Do these follower milestones apply in the UK?
Largely, yes. The UK is among the supported countries for Facebook Subscriptions, X Original Content Rewards and Snapchat’s creator payouts. YouTube publishes its list of Partner Programme locations in its help centre.
Do YouTube Shorts views count towards the 4,000 watch hours?
No. Watch hours from views in the Shorts feed do not count towards the long-form watch-hour threshold. Shorts have their own separate route of 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.
What happens if my follower count drops below a milestone?
It depends on the platform. YouTube’s new activity rules from February 2027 give channels that fall below the requirements a 90-day window to recover, while invite-only programmes such as Snapchat’s reassess creators regularly.
Is 10,000 followers a milestone on every platform?
No. It matters for Facebook Subscriptions, for example, but on YouTube the key thresholds are 500 and 1,000 subscribers, and on Snapchat the monetisation threshold is 50,000 followers.
How many followers do you need for Twitch Affiliate?
25. Within the same 30 days you also need to stream for at least 4 hours on 4 different days and reach an average of 3 concurrent viewers on 4 different days. Twitch tracks this in the Achievements section of your Creator Dashboard and usually sends the invitation by email and notification within one to three days of you qualifying.
