Short answer: Instagram profile visits count how many times people opened your profile during a chosen period. You’ll find the total in Insights, which any public account (personal or professional) can use, and each post or story shows how many visits it generated. Instagram never shows who visited, and no app can reveal it.
Profile visits sit between someone noticing your content and deciding to follow, buy or tap your link. That makes them one of the most practical numbers in Insights, even though they get less attention than views or likes. This guide covers what the metric counts, where to find it and how to raise it.
What counts as an Instagram profile visit?
A profile visit is recorded when someone lands on your profile page. That can happen in several ways:
- tapping your username or profile picture on a reel, post, story or comment;
- searching for your name and opening your profile;
- following a link or a mention that points to your account.
Instagram reports visits for the account as a whole and for individual feed posts and stories, so you can see which content sent people to your profile. The app doesn’t spell out whether several visits by the same person in one period are counted separately, so treat the figure as visits rather than a headcount of unique people.
Where do you find profile visits in Insights?
Instagram’s Help Centre says Insights are available to any public account, personal or professional (creator or business). If your account is private, you won’t see them.
Account-level profile visits
- Go to your profile and open Professional dashboard (on a personal account, Your dashboard), or tap the menu and choose Insights.
- Pick a time range. The app offers preset ranges such as the last 7, 30 or 90 days, plus custom dates within the past 90 days.
- Scroll to the profile activity area and tap Profile visits to see the total and the trend.
Profile visits from a single post or story
Open the post or reel and tap View insights. The profile activity section shows how many visits that piece of content generated, along with follows and link taps where relevant. For stories, swipe up on the story while its data is still available; our guide to how Instagram story views work explains how long story data stays visible.
One caveat if you use third-party analytics: Meta stopped supporting the account-level profile views metric in its API between October 2024 and January 2025. Some scheduling and reporting tools therefore no longer show it, and the Instagram app itself is now the reliable place to check.
Can you see who visited your Instagram profile?
No. Instagram only shows an aggregate number. There is no official feature, and no reliable unofficial one, that reveals the names of people who looked at your profile.
Apps and websites that promise to show your “profile stalkers” can’t access that data. At best they guess from likes and comments; at worst they ask for your login and put your account at risk. Never give your Instagram password to a tool that makes this claim.
The lists Instagram does show are viewers of your stories (for 48 hours), people who liked or commented, and your followers. If you want to know who is paying attention, those are the places to look.
Why do profile visits matter?
Views tell you how far your content travelled. Profile visits tell you whether it made anyone curious enough to find out more. Very few people follow from a reel alone; most check the profile first to see whether the rest of your content is worth it.
| Metric | What it tells you | Useful comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Views and reach | How many times and how widely your content was seen | Starting point for the funnel |
| Profile visits | How many times people opened your profile | Visits divided by reach shows how intriguing the content was |
| Follows | How many visitors decided to follow | Follows divided by visits shows how convincing your profile is |
| Link taps | How many people tapped a link in your bio | Link taps divided by visits shows whether your call to action works |
The two ratios point to different fixes. If plenty of people see your reels but few visit, the content isn’t sparking curiosity about you. If people visit but don’t follow, the problem is your profile: the bio, the first rows of the grid or a vague link. For the difference between views and reach, see Instagram views vs reach.
How can you increase your profile visits?
Profile visits rise when your content makes people want to know who made it. Practical ways to encourage that:
- Create series: part one of a series gives viewers a reason to look for part two on your profile.
- Show a face or a clear identity: consistent visuals and a recognisable voice make people curious about the account, not just the clip.
- Mention your profile naturally: “the full guide is pinned on my profile” works better than “follow for more”.
- Reply to comments: commenters who get a thoughtful reply often check who answered.
- Use stories with intent: a story teasing a new post sends existing followers back to your grid.
Then make sure the visit pays off. A clear bio (our Instagram bio ideas can help), pinned posts that show your best work and a focused link in bio turn more visitors into followers.
Some accounts add Instagram profile visitors to see how a refreshed profile performs under more traffic, but bought visits won’t follow or click on their own, so measure the outcome on genuine visits and follows.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify someone when I visit their profile?
No. Visiting a profile sends no notification, and at most your visit adds to the anonymous total the account owner sees in Insights.
Do my own profile visits count?
Instagram doesn’t say whether visits to your own profile are included. Either way, opening your own profile repeatedly wouldn’t tell you anything about your audience, so judge the metric on trends over weeks rather than single days.
Why did my profile visits drop when my views went up?
Content that travels widely, such as a trending reel, often reaches people who enjoy the clip but have no interest in the account behind it. More views from a broad audience can mean a lower visit rate, so compare visits with reach rather than looking at either number alone.
Can a personal account see profile visits?
Profile visits are part of Insights, and Instagram’s Help Centre says any public account, personal or professional, can use Insights. If your account is private, make it public to see them.
