TikTok SEO is the practice of making your videos easy for TikTok to understand and match to what people search for. You do it by finding the exact phrases your audience types into the search bar, then using them in your on-screen text, what you say, your caption and your profile, while still making a video people watch to the end.
Plenty of people now use TikTok like a search engine for recipes, product reviews, days out and how-tos. This guide shows you how to research keywords, where to place them and how to measure whether search is working for you.
What is TikTok SEO and why does it matter?
TikTok SEO means optimising videos so they appear in TikTok search results and are correctly matched to interested viewers on the For You feed. Search traffic is valuable because it keeps arriving long after a video’s first burst of views.
TikTok says its recommendation system uses video information such as captions, sounds and hashtags, alongside how people interact with your content. It also states that follower count is not a direct factor. That’s good news for smaller accounts: a well-targeted video can rank for a search even if you started last month.

How do you find keywords for TikTok SEO?
Start in TikTok itself, because the best keywords are the phrases real users are already searching for. Three free places give you most of what you need.
1. Search bar autocomplete
Type the start of a topic into TikTok search and note the suggestions. Typing “cheap days out” might suggest phrases like “cheap days out in London” or “cheap days out with kids”. Each suggestion is a video idea with a built-in audience.
Try adding letters after your main term (“sourdough a…”, “sourdough b…”) to uncover longer, more specific phrases. Longer phrases usually have fewer competing videos.
2. Related searches on videos and comments
TikTok often shows suggested searches on videos and above comment sections. These reveal what viewers wanted to know next, which makes them ideal for follow-up videos.
3. Creator Search Insights
Creator Search Insights is TikTok’s own keyword tool. According to TikTok’s announcement, you open it by typing “Creator Search Insights” into the search bar. It shows popular search topics by category and flags “content gap” topics that are searched often but have relatively few videos.
TikTok launched the tool in March 2024 in selected regions, so if it doesn’t appear on your account, rely on autocomplete and related searches instead. When it is available, content gap topics are the best place to start because demand is high and competition is low.
| Research method | Best for | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Search autocomplete | Finding long-tail phrases | Add letters or “how to”, “best”, “near me” after your topic |
| Related searches | Follow-up and series ideas | Check them on top videos in your niche |
| Creator Search Insights | Spotting demand and content gaps | Filter by category and prioritise gap topics |
| Comments on your videos | Questions your audience actually has | Turn each good question into a reply video |
Where should you put keywords on TikTok?
Use your main keyword in several places so TikTok can clearly read the topic: on screen, in speech, in the caption and in a small number of hashtags. Consistency across these signals matters more than repetition.
On-screen text
Put your target phrase in the text overlay during the first few seconds, for example “Easy Yorkshire puddings (no fail)”. It works as a hook for viewers and a topic label for TikTok.
Keep text within the centre of the frame so buttons and the caption don’t cover it.
Spoken keywords
Say the keyword out loud early in the video. TikTok can generate automatic captions from speech, so naming your topic clearly (“Here’s how to make Yorkshire puddings that rise every time”) gives the platform another text signal and helps viewers watching with the sound off.
Switch on auto-captions when you post. It improves accessibility and makes your spoken keywords visible.
Captions
Write a caption that reads naturally but includes the main phrase and one or two related terms. TikTok captions have plenty of room, so for tutorials and reviews a two- or three-sentence description can add useful context.
A weak caption says “You need this 😍”. A stronger one says “Easy Yorkshire pudding recipe for Sunday roast: the batter ratio and oven temperature that stop them sinking.”
Hashtags
Use a few specific hashtags that describe the video, not a long list of generic ones. Three to five relevant tags, such as #yorkshirepudding #sundayroast #ukrecipes, tell TikTok more than #fyp #viral #trending.

Alt text for photo posts
TikTok added alt text for photo posts in April 2025, and you can add it during upload or after publishing. Write a short, accurate description of each image. It exists mainly for accessibility, so describe what is shown rather than stuffing keywords.
How do you optimise your TikTok profile for search?
Your profile name, username and bio help you appear when people search for accounts, not just videos. Include what you do in plain words people would search.
- Name field: add a keyword alongside your name, such as “Amy | Budget Travel UK”.
- Bio: say who you help and with what (“Cheap UK days out and weekend trips”).
- Playlists: where available, group videos into playlists with keyword titles, for example “Yorkshire day trips”.
A clear, searchable profile also turns search visitors into followers. Our guide on how to get more TikTok followers covers the rest of profile optimisation.
Do TikTok videos show up on Google?
Public TikTok videos can appear in Google results, and Google has shown short-form video results for some searches. That means a well-optimised TikTok can bring views from outside the app too.
The same habits help on both: clear captions, descriptive on-screen text and videos that answer a specific question. If your account is private, your videos won’t be visible to the public or to search engines.
Content still decides whether you rank
Keywords get your video considered, but viewer behaviour decides whether it keeps showing. TikTok’s recommendation system weighs strong interest signals, such as watching a video to the end, more heavily than weaker ones.
- Answer the search fast. If someone searched “how to descale a kettle”, show the method in the first seconds.
- Deliver on the promise. A misleading title may win a click, but early swipes send a poor signal.
- Make one video per question. Specific videos match searches better than broad compilations.
- Update winners. If an older video ranks, make a refreshed version with 2026 information.
Strong search videos can also grow into wider hits. Our guide to going viral on TikTok explains how to push a video beyond your niche.
How do you measure TikTok SEO results?
Check where your views come from in TikTok analytics. Each video’s traffic source breakdown shows how much came from search compared with the For You feed, your profile and other sources.
Track search traffic for your keyword-targeted videos over several weeks. Videos that keep gathering search views long after posting are your best topics, so build series and follow-ups around them.

Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok SEO really work?
Yes. TikTok says it uses video information such as captions, sounds and hashtags to recommend content, so clear keywords help it match your video to searches and interested viewers.
How many hashtags should I use for TikTok SEO?
A few specific, relevant hashtags are usually enough. Focus on describing the video rather than adding generic tags like #fyp.
Is Creator Search Insights available in the UK?
TikTok launched it in selected regions. Type “Creator Search Insights” into the search bar to check whether your account has access.
How long does it take to rank in TikTok search?
It varies. Some videos pick up search views within days, while others build slowly over weeks as more people search the topic.
Should I say keywords out loud in my videos?
Yes. Saying your topic clearly helps viewers, and with auto-captions on it adds visible text that describes your video.
Search-optimised videos still benefit from a strong start. If you want early social proof while your keywords do their work, our TikTok views service is designed to sit alongside good content, not replace it.
