Telegram Stars and Paid Reactions Explained

By Oliver Hayes · Updated · 5 min read

Short answer: Telegram Stars are Telegram’s in-app digital currency. You buy them through the app and spend them on digital goods, gifts, paid posts and paid reactions. A paid (Star) reaction sends Stars straight to a channel’s balance, shows as a star with a counter and a leaderboard of top senders, and the channel owner receives 100% of those Stars, which can later be converted into crypto rewards via Fragment or spent on Telegram ads.

Stars started as a way to pay for things inside bots and mini apps, but they have become the main way audiences tip creators on Telegram. Below we cover what Stars are, how paid reactions work, how channel owners turn Stars into rewards and the rules that trip people up.

What are Telegram Stars?

Telegram launched Stars on 6 June 2024 as a currency for digital goods and services sold by bots and mini apps – things like e-books, courses or items in Telegram games. Telegram says Stars comply with Apple’s and Google’s rules on selling digital products, which is why they exist at all: they let developers sell inside the mobile apps without breaking app store policies.

You can buy Stars through in-app purchases on iOS and Android, or through @PremiumBot on the direct Android version of Telegram. Telegram’s terms call them “virtual items”, and that matters: Stars in your personal balance cannot be sold, withdrawn or transferred, and Telegram does not refund unwanted or accidental purchases.

Today Stars can be used to:

  • buy digital goods and services from bots and mini apps;
  • unlock paid media posted in channels;
  • send gifts and gift Telegram Premium to other users;
  • pay for channel subscriptions that grant access to private content;
  • pay message fees set by users who charge non-contacts to message them (the recipient keeps 85%);
  • send paid Star reactions on channel posts.

How do paid Star reactions work?

Telegram introduced Star reactions on 14 August 2024 as a way for followers to support channels directly. Instead of tapping a free emoji, a subscriber taps the star reaction and chooses how many Stars to send. Those Stars move to the channel’s balance and the star counter on the post goes up.

Paid reactions are off by default. A channel owner switches them on under Channel Settings → Reactions → Enable Paid Reactions. Once enabled, the star appears alongside the channel’s normal reactions on each post.

How Star reactions show on a post

  • A star with a running total: it counts Stars sent, not the number of people who sent them.
  • A leaderboard of top senders: each post with Star reactions ranks its biggest supporters.
  • An anonymous option: senders can opt out of appearing on the leaderboard if they would rather support quietly.

Normal emoji reactions are free and simply show interest. Our article on what members, views and reactions really signal covers how to read those. Star reactions cost the sender something, so they are a much stronger sign that a post landed.

How can a channel earn Stars?

MethodWhat the subscriber doesWhat Telegram says about it
Star reactionsSends Stars on a post they likeThe channel owner receives 100% of the Stars
Paid media and paid postsPays Stars to unlock contentRewarded per Star earned, at a rate set in the creator terms
Channel subscriptionsPays Stars periodically for access to channel contentCharged on a recurring basis rather than once
DonationsSends Stars to support the creatorRewarded based on the number of Stars received

Stars are separate from Telegram’s ad revenue sharing, where eligible channels receive a share of the revenue from sponsored messages. The creator terms currently describe that share as 50%.

How do creators withdraw or use their Stars?

Stars earned by a channel sit in its monetisation balance, and the owner has three options.

  1. Convert them into crypto rewards. Telegram processes creator rewards through Fragment, a separate non-custodial platform. The rewards are paid in Gram, the cryptocurrency that was called Toncoin until it was renamed in June 2026. Only the channel owner can start a withdrawal, and Telegram’s developer documentation says it requires the owner’s two-step verification password.
  2. Spend them on Telegram Ads to promote the same channel. Telegram’s terms value each Star at 0.02 US dollars of advertising credit when used this way, and say that value can change.
  3. Leave them in the balance – but not forever (see below).

Rules worth knowing before you count on the income

  • Waiting period: Telegram’s content creator terms say Star rewards become available for withdrawal 21 days after they are earned.
  • Expiry: Stars a creator receives are valid for three years. Any not converted into rewards in that time are forfeited.
  • Value is not fixed: the currency estimate shown in the app is for convenience only, and Telegram sets the value of Stars at its discretion. For paid content, the terms currently describe a reward worth the equivalent of 0.013 US dollars per Star.
  • Withdrawals are final: they cannot be reversed or refunded, and Telegram notes that rewards may be unavailable in some countries or for some channels.
  • Tax is your responsibility: payouts are stated to be inclusive of tax. If you are a UK creator, our guide to what UK influencers earn puts these amounts in context.

Do Stars and paid reactions help a channel grow?

Indirectly, yes. A post with visible Star support looks valued, and the leaderboard gives regular supporters some recognition, which encourages them to keep engaging. Reinvesting Stars into Telegram Ads is also one of the few built-in ways to reach people outside your current audience.

What Stars will not do is replace the basics: posts people want to read, a clear posting rhythm and a channel that is easy to find. Our complete guide to growing a Telegram channel covers those foundations, and if you are still deciding on a format, see Telegram channel vs group. StreamElevate also offers Telegram post Stars for creators who want a post to show Star activity, but treat that as presentation rather than income: bought engagement does not replace real supporters.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a refund for Telegram Stars?

Telegram itself does not refund unwanted or accidental purchases. If a bot or mini app fails to deliver what you paid Stars for, contact it with the /paysupport command first; the developer can refund Stars, and you can escalate a dispute if they refuse a legitimate request.

Can I send a Star reaction anonymously?

Yes. You can choose not to appear on a post’s top-sender leaderboard. The Stars still reach the channel and still count towards the total on the post.

Can ordinary users cash out Telegram Stars?

No. Stars in a personal balance cannot be sold, withdrawn or transferred. Only Stars earned by channels, bots and mini apps can be converted into rewards, through Fragment.

What happens to my Stars if I delete my Telegram account?

Under Telegram’s terms, any remaining Star balance is forfeited if you delete your account or lose access to it, and also if the account is terminated for breaking the rules.
