What Is Snapscore and How Is It Calculated?

By Oliver Hayes · Updated · 4 min read

Short answer: Your Snapscore is a running total tied to your Snapchat account that grows as you send and receive Snaps and post Stories, plus a few other factors Snapchat does not name. You can see it on your Profile screen just below your display name. It cannot go down or be reset, and it is not a follower count or a measure of reach.

Snapscore is one of the most talked-about numbers on Snapchat and one of the least explained. Snapchat keeps the exact formula private, so there are plenty of myths around it. Here is what Snapchat actually says, and what the number does and does not tell you.

How is Snapscore calculated?

Snapchat describes the calculation as a “super-secret, special equation”. What it does confirm is that the score combines:

  • Snaps you send to friends.
  • Snaps you receive from friends.
  • Stories you post.
  • A few other factors that Snapchat does not list.

Snapchat does not publish how many points each action is worth, how often the score refreshes or which “other factors” are included. Any website that claims to know the exact points per Snap is guessing.

One thing is certain: the score only moves one way. Snapchat states that a Snapscore cannot be decreased or reset, so removing friends, deleting Snaps or taking a break will not lower it.

Where can you see your Snapscore and your friends’ scores?

Open your Profile screen (tap your Bitmoji or Story icon) and look just below your display name. Friends can also see Snapscores through Friendship Profiles.

Snapchat+ subscribers get one extra view: they can open a friend’s Friendship Profile, tap the friend’s Snapscore and see how much it has changed since the last time they checked.

What is the Snapscore Multiplier?

The Snapscore Multiplier is a Snapchat+ feature. When it is switched on, Snaps you send to or receive from other Snapchat+ subscribers count double towards your score. It is off by default; to turn it on, go to My Account, tap your Snapchat+ membership card and toggle on the Snapscore Multiplier setting.

This is a good illustration of what Snapscore really is: a fun activity counter that Snapchat can tweak as a subscription perk. It is not a ranking signal you need to manage.

Snapscore myths: what it does not measure

MythReality
Snapscore is your follower countNo. Followers are a separate number shown on a Public Profile, if you choose to display it.
A high Snapscore gets you more Spotlight viewsSnapchat’s explanation of Spotlight ranking focuses on viewer actions such as watch time, favourites, shares and comments, and does not mention Snapscore.
Your score drops if you are inactiveNo. Snapchat says the score cannot be decreased or reset.
Every message adds pointsSnapchat only confirms Snaps sent and received, Stories posted and some unnamed factors.
A high Snapscore helps you earn moneySnapchat’s Monetization Program looks at followers, view time and other criteria, not Snapscore.

If you want an audience beyond your friends, the numbers that matter are followers and views on your Public Profile, which we explain in Snapchat Public Profiles and followers. How creators get paid is covered in how Snapchat pays creators.

Is it worth trying to raise your Snapscore?

For most people, no. A high Snapscore mostly shows that an account sends and receives a lot of Snaps. It can be a bit of social fun among friends, but it does not unlock features, reach or payments as far as Snapchat has said.

Be careful with “Snapscore booster” apps, bots or services that ask for your username and password. Handing your login to a third party puts your account and your friends’ messages at risk. Reputable growth services never need it: at StreamElevate, for example, we only ever ask for the public link to a profile and never for a password.

If your real goal is growing on Snapchat, put your effort into content people want to watch. Our guides to growing on Snapchat and getting more Snapchat followers cover that in detail, and our Snapchat services focus on followers and views, the metrics that are visible to other people, rather than Snapscore.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my Snapscore not gone up after sending Snaps?

Snapchat does not publish how often scores refresh or exactly which Snaps count, so a short delay or a smaller-than-expected rise is not unusual. Remember that the formula also includes factors Snapchat keeps private.

Does deleting friends lower your Snapscore?

No. Snapchat says a Snapscore cannot be decreased or reset, so removing friends or deleting conversations does not take points away.

What is a good Snapscore?

There is no official benchmark. Because the score only ever rises, it mostly reflects how long and how often someone has been sending Snaps, so comparing scores between people says little about their influence.

Do Snapchat+ subscribers get a higher Snapscore automatically?

No. Subscribers can switch on the Snapscore Multiplier, which doubles the effect of Snaps exchanged with other Snapchat+ subscribers only. Snaps with non-subscribers count as normal.
