Short answer: WhatsApp channel followers are private by design. Followers cannot see who else follows a channel, and admins cannot see a follower’s full phone number or name unless they already have that person saved as a contact. Follower numbers still matter, though: WhatsApp lists them among the factors it uses to recommend channels and rank them in search.
Channels turned WhatsApp from a messaging app into a place where creators, brands, clubs and publishers can broadcast to an audience. If you run one, or are thinking of following one, it helps to know exactly what is visible to whom and how people find channels in the first place.
What is a WhatsApp channel?
A channel is a one-way broadcast. Admins send updates – text, links, photos, videos, stickers, voice messages and polls – and followers receive them in the Updates tab, separate from their personal chats. Followers cannot reply to updates or message the admins; they can react with emoji and vote in polls.
WhatsApp first launched channels in Colombia and Singapore in June 2023 before rolling them out more widely. Following a channel is never automatic: you can preview a channel’s recent updates first and unfollow at any time, and notifications from channels are muted by default.

Can followers see each other on a WhatsApp channel?
No. According to WhatsApp, other people viewing a channel – including other followers – cannot see who follows it, and cannot see your name, phone number, profile picture, reactions or poll votes. Your own contacts cannot see which channels you follow either, unless they happen to be an admin of one of them.
Admins’ details are protected in the other direction too. When channels launched, WhatsApp said an admin’s phone number and profile photo are not shown to followers.
What can a channel admin see about followers?
Less than many people expect, but not nothing. What an admin sees depends on whether they have you saved as a contact:
| Who is looking | Your phone number and name | Your profile picture | Your reactions and poll votes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other followers and viewers | Not visible | Not visible | Not visible |
| Admin who does not have you as a contact | Not visible (no full number or profile name) | May be visible, depending on your privacy settings | Visible – admins can see how you interact with their content |
| Admin who has you saved as a contact | Visible | Visible | Visible |
Two more points are worth knowing. If you become an admin yourself, the other admins of that channel can see you even if they are not your contacts. And channels are not end-to-end encrypted in the way personal chats are: WhatsApp said at launch that channel history is stored on its servers for up to 30 days. For admins, there are useful controls too – WhatsApp said at launch that admins can block screenshots and forwards from their channel, decide who can follow it and choose whether it appears in the directory.
How are WhatsApp channels discovered?
There are three main routes into a channel:
- The channel directory: people browse by category, sort by new, popular or most active channels, and switch country to see channels from other regions.
- Search: users can search all channels available to them.
- Links and QR codes: admins can share a channel link or unique QR code on their Status, in personal chats, by email or anywhere online.
A verified badge next to a channel name means WhatsApp has confirmed the channel is authentic, which matters when fans are looking for an official account among look-alikes.
Do follower numbers help a channel get found?
Yes. WhatsApp says its channel recommendations are based on things like the number of followers, reactions, how often a channel posts and how similar its content is to channels you already follow, along with your general location and language. Search results may be prioritised by how often a channel posts, its follower and viewer counts and its similarity to other channels in your country.
In other words, follower count is not just a vanity number on WhatsApp: it feeds directly into discovery, alongside activity and engagement.
How can you grow your WhatsApp channel followers?
- Post regularly. Update frequency appears in both the recommendation and the search factors, so a quiet channel is harder to find.
- Share your link and QR code everywhere you already have an audience: your Status, email signature, website, other social profiles and packaging or printed material.
- Use polls and ask for reactions. They are the main ways followers can interact, and reactions are one of the recommendation signals.
- Give people a reason to turn notifications on. Notifications are muted by default, so tell followers what they gain – early access, deals, exclusive updates – by switching them on.
- Keep your profile clear: a recognisable name, photo and description help when someone finds you in the directory or search.
- Consider paid options where available. In June 2025 Meta announced channel subscriptions, promoted channels in the directory and ads in Status, all limited to the Updates tab and rolling out gradually, so they may not be available to you yet.
