How Does SoundCloud Count Plays?

By Oliver Hayes · Updated · 4 min read

Short answer: SoundCloud counts a play each time someone plays your track, except plays from your own account. Plays through the embedded SoundCloud player on other websites count too, and offline plays by SoundCloud Go subscribers are added when they reconnect. Signed-in plays appear in real time, others within about 24 hours, and plays from fake accounts can be removed.

SoundCloud publishes less detail about its play count than Spotify does about streams, so it helps to know exactly what SoundCloud does say and what it leaves open. This guide covers both, along with how plays relate to Insights and to earning money.

What counts as a play on SoundCloud?

SoundCloud’s help centre defines plays simply as the total number of times your track has been played. The rules it does spell out:

  • Self-plays are excluded. Playing your own track while signed in to your account does not add to the count. SoundCloud suggests playing it while signed out if you want to check a play registers.
  • Embedded plays count. SoundCloud says plays through embeds of your SoundCloud player on other websites count towards your totals.
  • Offline plays count. When a SoundCloud Go subscriber listens offline, the play is added once they reconnect.

Unlike Spotify, which sets a clear 30-second rule (see what counts as a stream on Spotify), SoundCloud does not publish a minimum listening time for a play, and it does not publish a rule for repeat plays by the same listener. Be cautious with any figure you see quoted as an “official” SoundCloud threshold.

When does the SoundCloud play count update?

Type of playWhen it shows in your stats
Signed-in listenerIn real time
Listener who is not signed inWithin up to 24 hours
Offline play by a Go subscriberWhen they reconnect, which can be up to 30 days later, dated to when they pressed play
Your own plays while signed inNever counted

Two more details explain most “missing plays” questions:

  • Caching: the number on a track page or profile can look stuck because it is cached. SoundCloud recommends the Insights Overview page for the most accurate figures.
  • Time zone: the Insights Overview uses Greenwich Mean Time, so daily totals may not match your local day.

Why can SoundCloud plays go down?

SoundCloud’s Trust and Safety team removes fake accounts, and when an account is removed, its interactions with tracks are deleted. If bots were playing your music, your totals can drop. SoundCloud also says play counts cannot be adjusted or restored on request.

SoundCloud is direct about paid services that promise popularity: they are not affiliated with SoundCloud, break its Terms of Use, and accounts caught faking popularity risk permanent suspension. Its guidance on artificial streaming adds that illegitimate plays are removed when detected and that tracks, or in serious cases a whole catalogue, can be taken down.

That is the honest backdrop to any growth service, including ours. If you are considering a boost, our page on SoundCloud plays explains what is delivered; bought plays never earn royalties, and no provider can guarantee they will never be removed. Our guide to real vs fake followers explains how to tell the difference in your own audience.

How do plays show up in SoundCloud Insights?

Every account gets Insights, with a default 30-day view that you can switch to day, week, month or year. An activity graph shows your top five tracks individually and groups the rest. The Artist Pro plan adds Advanced Insights, including:

  • Top listeners: your 50 most engaged signed-in listeners for any period.
  • Countries and cities: the top 50 of each, useful for planning shows and releases.
  • Sources: whether plays come from the SoundCloud app, a particular playlist, or websites and apps outside SoundCloud, such as an embedded player.
  • Engagement detail: which tracks earned likes, comments, reposts and downloads.

If a term in your stats is unclear, our social media growth glossary explains the common ones.

Do SoundCloud plays earn money?

Only if your tracks are monetised. Monetisation through SoundCloud for Artists requires a paid Artist or Artist Pro plan. The Artist plan, available in selected territories, covers two distributed and monetised tracks a month; Artist Pro removes that cap. Other conditions SoundCloud lists:

  • the track must be original content you own all the rights to;
  • unofficial covers and remixes, mashups, DJ sets, audio recordings and podcasts are not monetisable;
  • tracks must be longer than 30 seconds and shorter than 10 minutes.

Monetised artists are paid through fan-powered royalties. Instead of splitting one shared pool by total plays, SoundCloud pays out based on how much of each fan’s listening went to you, from the ad revenue and subscription fees that fan generates. There is no minimum stream count, and only plays on SoundCloud count. One consequence: a bot looping your track adds little, because the payout follows real listeners’ subscriptions and ad views.

Frequently asked questions

Does SoundCloud count plays from people who are not logged in?

Yes. Plays from listeners who are not signed in are counted, but they can take up to 24 hours to appear, while signed-in plays update in real time.

Why don’t my own plays show on SoundCloud?

SoundCloud excludes self-plays. Any play from the account that uploaded the track is not added to its play count or Insights.

Why is the play count on my track page different from Insights?

Track page and profile numbers can be cached, so they may lag behind. SoundCloud says the Insights Overview page gives the most accurate figures.

Do SoundCloud downloads count as plays?

Offline listening by SoundCloud Go subscribers counts as plays once they reconnect, dated to the moment they pressed play. Downloads themselves are tracked as a separate engagement figure in Insights.
