Instagram in the UK: the headline numbers

  • 38.5 million UK adults use Instagram monthly — 78% of online adults (Ofcom, Online Nation 2025)
  • Monthly reach grew 7% year on year
  • The average user spends 20 minutes a day in the app
  • 67% of UK Instagram visitors are over 35 — and 31% are over 55
  • 44% of UK smartphone users open Instagram every day
  • Instagram’s own ad tools claim 35.5 million UK users, or 50.9% of the population (DataReportal, Digital 2026: The United Kingdom)

Instagram’s real position: enormous reach, modest attention

Instagram is the third-largest social platform in the UK by reach, behind only YouTube (94%) and Facebook/Messenger (93%). Four in five British adults who go online use it in a given month.

What it does not command is time. At 20 minutes a day the average Instagram user gives the app less than TikTok (28), Facebook (43) or YouTube (51). Instagram is where almost everyone in Britain is, briefly.

PlatformMonthly reach (UK online adults)Minutes per day
YouTube94%51
Facebook / Messenger93%43
Instagram78%20
Reddit60%4
TikTok56%28

For most businesses that combination is exactly right. If you want to be seen by the widest possible slice of the British public in a format they will glance at, no platform beats Instagram. If you want people to sit with your content, the numbers point elsewhere.

Who uses Instagram in the UK

Ofcom’s breakdown of UK Instagram visitors by age is the figure most brand strategies get wrong:

Age groupShare of UK Instagram visitorsMinutes per day
18–3433%35 minutes
35–5436%22 minutes
55+31%8 minutes

The 35–54 group is now the largest single age cohort on UK Instagram, ahead of 18–34s. And the over-55s, at 31%, are almost as numerous as the under-35s. Instagram in Britain is a mainstream adult platform, not a young one — it has simply kept its original users as they aged.

Attention still skews young: 18–34s give the app 35 minutes a day against eight minutes from the over-55s. So the youngest third of the audience accounts for a disproportionate share of all Instagram time in the UK.

The gender split is 53% female to 47% male — effectively balanced.

The engagement problem nobody caused

If your Instagram engagement rate has fallen over the past two years, the most likely explanation has nothing to do with your content or the algorithm.

Ofcom found that the share of UK social media users who post, share or comment fell from 61% in 2024 to 49% in 2026 (Adults’ Media Use and Attitudes 2026). Over the same period, 49% of users said they worry that something they post could cause them problems later, up from 43%.

Britain is watching as much as ever and participating far less. The audience for your posts has not shrunk; the pool of people willing to react to them has, by roughly a fifth in two years. Benchmarks published before 2025 are measuring a different internet. Our engagement rate calculator tells you where you stand today.

The practical consequence: each early like or comment now represents a scarcer resource, and moves a post further. That is the whole mechanism behind Instagram likes and followers as a growth tool — not manufacturing an audience, but getting past the threshold where the shrinking half of the internet that still engages actually sees you.

What this means for growing an Instagram account in the UK

Design for the glance. Twenty minutes a day spread across everything Instagram shows means your post gets seconds. The first frame and the first line do nearly all the work.

Your audience is older than your content assumes. Two thirds of UK Instagram visitors are 35+. If your references, music and pacing are built for 22-year-olds, you are optimising for a third of the platform.

Reach is Instagram’s product; use it for discovery. With 78% monthly reach, Instagram is the best place in Britain to be found by people who have never heard of you — then move them somewhere with more attention. That is why Instagram-to-YouTube and Instagram-to-email funnels outperform trying to hold people in-app.

Daily habit is strong but not dominant. 44% of UK smartphone users open Instagram daily, against 63% for Facebook and 76% for WhatsApp. Posting daily reaches materially fewer people per post than the same cadence on Facebook.

Ofcom measures people; DataReportal reports the audiences platforms claim in their own ad tools, which count accounts. That is why Ofcom’s 38.5 million monthly users and Instagram’s claimed 35.5 million advertising reach do not match — they are measuring different things over different populations.

Frequently asked questions

How many people use Instagram in the UK?

38.5 million UK online adults use Instagram each month, or 78% of online adults, according to Ofcom’s Online Nation 2025. Instagram’s own advertising tools claim a UK audience of 35.5 million.

How much time do UK users spend on Instagram?

20 minutes per day on average — 35 minutes among 18–34s, 22 minutes among 35–54s and eight minutes among the over-55s.

What is the average age of Instagram users in the UK?

Older than most people assume. 36% of UK Instagram visitors are 35–54, 33% are 18–34 and 31% are 55 or over. Two thirds of the audience is over 35.

Is Instagram bigger than TikTok in the UK?

On reach, comfortably: 78% of online adults against TikTok’s 56%. On attention, no: TikTok users spend 28 minutes a day in the app against Instagram’s 20.

Why has my Instagram engagement rate dropped?

Partly because fewer people engage with anything. The proportion of UK social media users who post, share or comment fell from 61% in 2024 to 49% in 2026 (Ofcom). Engagement rates across the platform have fallen for reasons unrelated to individual content.

Is Instagram still growing in the UK?

Slowly. Monthly reach grew 7% year on year — healthy for a platform already reaching 78% of online adults, but half the growth rate TikTok recorded over the same period.
